Even fly rods originated from that very principle, and using actual bait on a fly rod is not unheard of (purists be damned LOL). My own noodle rod is a 13'.īottom line is, basically any setup can be used for lures or bait, there really is no rule saying that you can do this and not do that. They are designed to be very flexible to take on all of the fish's sudden surges. Noodle rods are long light to medium rods, usually over 10' long. We also use what are known as "noodle rods" for using bait for salmon and steelhead. Great setup to make smaller fish such as Bluegills, Yellow Perch, Bullheads, Brook Trout, and small bass a lot of fun, and amazing for fishing with live minnows or 'crawlers. Even my own Ultra-light setup is a Pflueger President UL combo consisting of a 4'10" rod, a Pflueger President model 6920 UL spinning reel, and I use 4lb Sufix 832 braid w/ a 2lb Berkley Fluorocarbon leader, tied direct to the braid via Albright knot. Small, thin rods, small reels that handle at max 6lb test (normally lower). We use a few different methods as well for small fish, such as Ultra-Light gear. Our basic float fishing rigs are basically normal spinning combos, tho baitcasting tackle can be used as well (tho not an exact practice because baitcasting tackle excells for use of heavier tackle). Use of match rods are not a common practice here in the US, as noted above. Ironically much of that increase in popularity has been driven by match fishermen looking to the very accurate and sensitive bait presentation poles afford the angler. However, I should point out that Pole fishing has been gaining in popularity in the UK over the last 30 years or so. Many European countries prefer poles in preference to match rods as they allow light accurate presentation of the baits, perfect for fishing overfished match venues where fish tend to be more wary. While not exclusive to the UK, Match rods tend to be more common here than the rest of the EU. Match rods are also common amongst pleasure anglers as their actions tend to be forgiving and suit a wide range of floats. As opposed to stick float, waggler, carp, barbel and so on those style of float rods have very specific handling and actions designed for larger species or very particular styles of float fishing. It gets its name from the style of fishing where it is typically employed, match fishing. It is a float rod designed to pick up line quickly on the strike with an action that can handle a wide range of fish.
